Halfway Point
Week 3:
Week 3 of the program was jam-packed with activities as we went to our 2nd-day trip, Italica, and we also started our program’s cultural activities. As UHM students, we are required to participate in flamenco dance lessons. We have seven classes once a week, sometimes twice a week for an hour and a half. These classes are fun as you are getting hands-on experience with an important traditional Spanish dance. The day after, we had our first cooking class where we cooked paella, which is a traditional Spanish dish. Our lovely flamenco teacher, Rosia, was also our cooking teacher. We learned step by step how to make paella, we also prepared some of the ingredients like deshelling the shrimp. The end product was delicious, I even went for seconds! We will also have another cooking class in November where we will make Tortillas.
Week 5:
For the whole month of October, there was a food festival filled with cuisines from over 50 countries. I had a kangaroo burger from Australia which was not that bad. I could have it again. One day, in particular, was something all of the students and I were looking forward to, which was Queen night. There was a Queen impressionist and he performed all the classic songs. Although it was packed, and we got lost from the other students, I enjoyed it a lot. You can say this was my first concert in Spain.
After our trip to Ronda, two of my friends and I went to an orchestra concert. I was so excited as this was different from all the things I have done and it was in a part of town that I rarely go to. We were sitting in a circle surrounded by candles. In the middle of the circle were four orchestra players. For about an hour, they were playing movie theme songs. My friend conveniently found this event through an Instagram ad. If you want to go to this, check out the site Fever for future events.

Week 6:
Week 6 was our midterms, but that week also marked the halfway point of the program. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been in Spain for a month and a half and I will sadly leave in 8 weeks. The program surely flew by. I only had one midterm for my Art of Spain class. I’ll have another midterm for my Project Management class sometime in the next coming weeks. To celebrate the end of midterms, we arranged a fancy dinner at an Italian restaurant with all the other students in the program. After dinner, we headed to a flamenco show that Rosia recommended. After, a couple of students and I headed over to a club for some drinks to end the night.
